Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana is home to one of the most prestigious historically black colleges there is. It is often overshadowed by other prestigious HBCU’s such as Howard, Morehouse and Spelman, but still produces many successful individuals. The males of this university decided that they wanted to set high standards for the incoming freshmen students. Something that they would never forget. They decided to all wear suits to their first days of classes. For many first generation college students, and others simply completely new to the idea of college, this surely set the standard high.
“When young men come to college, they have no idea what the image of a college man is, so I wanted their first image to be a man of honor,” says Jerome Bailey, Dillard’s SGA president, and the author of the idea. He adds that if students “are dressed professionally from the first day on, it will not be a fad or a phase, it will be the first and lasting impression.”
